Congratulations on becoming a new dog owner. You will find this to be a rewarding experience. Dogs make great companions. Owning a dog is like having a child because they both require work that includes attention and care. This blog post will go over ten helpful tips for new dog owners.

1. Do Research

Before you bring home a dog it is important to research and find the breed that is best suited for your lifestyle and personality. Since not all breeds of dogs are good with children or other pets it is important to have realistic expectations and know what you are signing up for.

Work goes into owning a dog because they require attention and exercise. If you feel you are not ready to take on a big responsibility, it may be best to wait until you are.

2. Setting Rules and Boundaries

It is important to set rules and boundaries for your dog. It is good to establish a routine and stick to it, feed them on a schedule, and put them in their crate or bed when you are not able to supervise them. This will make it easier to discipline and reward them.

3. Realistic Expectations

It is important to have realistic expectations when owning a dog because as previously mentioned they are a lot of work and require attention and exercise. Puppies require more work than adult dogs since they need to be house trained, taught basic commands, and socialized with other people and animals. It is not easy to train a dog, so you need to practice patience.

4. Provide Enough Exercise

It is essential to provide dog with enough of exercise since it is needed for their physical and mental health. If your dog does not get enough exercise, you risk them becoming bored and destructive. Long walks and playing fetch are great for exercise and keeps them entertained. Try rotating their toys to keep entertained and provide a safe space for them to play and run around.

5. Spay or Neuter your Dog

Spaying or neutering your dog is important for their health and well-being. This can help reduce the risk of certain diseases, including aggression and other unwanted behaviors. Having your dog microchipped is something to consider as well in case they ever get lost.

6. Find A Vet You Can Trust

Finding a dependable vet is especially important when it comes to your pet’s health. This can help ensure that they live a happy and healthy life. Building a relationship with your vet can give you confidence that they will assess your pet and keep track of any issues should they arise.

7. Crate Train Your Dog

Crate training your dog is an important part of their training which helps them learn how to behave in a home setting and makes house-training much easier. You can start by putting your puppy in the crate for short periods of time and gradually increase the amount of time they spend in there.

Never use the crate as a punishment. It should only be used when you are unable to supervise them. Feed them their meals in the crate and give them toys and treats to keep them occupied. As they get older, you can start leaving them home alone for longer periods of time by using the crate as a safe space.

8. Socializing

It is good to socialize your dog and take them to the park, pet stores, and other places where they will be around people and animals. This will help reduce their anxiety when meeting new people and animals and will make them better behaved when out in public.

9. Vaccinations

Your dog needs to be vaccinated against various diseases that include rabies, parvovirus, and distemper. It is important to get your dog vaccinated as soon as they are old enough. Most vaccines should be given when the dog is between six and eight weeks old. Keep up with their vaccinations schedule and make sure you bring them to the vet for check-ups. Puppies should be vaccinated every three to four weeks until they are 16 weeks old, and then receive a booster vaccine once a year. Adult dogs should be vaccinated every three years.

10. Teaching Basic Commands

Train your dog when they are puppies the basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and down. Commands and rewards should be practiced regularly and consistent. As your dog learns each command, move on to the next one. Make sure you always praise them when they obey a command.
